Have you figured out the second head fake?

Randolph (Randy) Frederick Pausch was an American professor of computer science and human-computer interaction and design at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In September 2006, Randy learned that he had pancreatic cancer and in August 2007 he was given a terminal diagnosis: "3 to 6 months of good health left".

He gave an upbeat lecture entitled "The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon, which became a popular YouTube video. He then co-authored a book called The Last Lecture on the same theme, which became a New York Times best-seller. Randy died of complications from pancreatic cancer on July 25, 2008. This “last lecture” is what is given by professors as if it was the last one they will ever be able to give. Randy’s last lecture was on the topic: “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”.

The end of the lecture, it turned out, was just the beginning.

In his presentations, he spoke of working hard, achieving your own dreams, overcoming obstacles, seizing every moment… and at the end of his speech asked the following:

Did you figure out the head fake? It’s not about how to achieve your dreams. It’s about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself; the dreams will come to you. Did you figure out the second head fake? The talk’s not for you. It’s for my kids.

To understand this better you need to know that the “head fake” he is speaking of means learning something indirectly or an indirect message … as he said in his speech:

“Most of what we learn, we learn indirectly (by head fake)” and “The best way to head fake someone in education, is to have them learn something while they think they are learning something else”.

• You cannot change the cards you are dealt. Just how you play the hand.

• Don't complain. Just work harder.

• Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

• Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

• "If your kids want to paint their bedrooms, as a favor to me, let them do it."
